In the name of Allah,

LX. BOOK OF COMMENTARY : (Interpretation of the Holy Qur'ān) :— '
The words 'Ar-Rahman', 'Ar-Rahim' (i.e. The Most Beneficent, the Most Merci- ful) are two words derived from 'Ar-Raḥma (i. e. Mercy), and the words 'Ar-Rahim' and Ar-Raḥm have one meaning as the words "Al-Alim' and 'Al-Alim' have one and the same meaning (i. e. the Cognizant One).

SURAT AL-FATIHA (1)
(I) CHAPTER. What has been said about Fatiḥa-tul-Kitāb (1) (i.e. The Open- ing of the Book). It is also called Um-- ul-Kitab (i.e. The Mother of the Book), i. e. because it is the first Sura that has been written in the copies of the Qur'an, and it is also the first Sura to be recited in prayer.

باب ما جاء فى فاتحة الكتاب. وسميت أم الكتاب أَنَّهُ يَبْداً بكتابتها في المصاحف. ويبدأ بقراءتها في الصلاة . الدين : الجزاء في الخير والشر، كما تدين تدان . وقال مجاهد:
بالدين : بالحساب . مدينين : محاسبين
